What a cookie is
A cookie is a small file a site stores on your device so it can remember something between page loads — a preference you set, or the fact that you have already answered a question. Some are set by us and some by the companies that serve our advertising.
The four categories
- Strictly necessary: Keep the site working and remember your consent choice. These are always set, because without them we could not remember that you declined the rest. They carry no advertising or tracking purpose.
- Preferences: Remember settings beyond the ones you set directly. One thing sits outside this category: if you switch the site to dark mode, that choice is stored in your browser straight away, because storing it is the whole of what you asked for. It is never read for any other purpose and it never leaves your device.
- Analytics: Tell us, in aggregate, which pages are used and where people give up. Set only with your consent.
- Advertising: Used by Google and its partners to measure advertising and, if you allow it, to personalise it. Set only with your consent. Declining does not remove the ads; it removes the personalisation.
Your calculator inputs are not stored
Worth repeating here, because a cookie policy is where people look for it: the numbers you type into a calculator are not written to a cookie, not sent to our servers, and not shared with our advertising partners. They exist in your browser's memory and nowhere else.
Changing your mind
Use the Cookie settings link in the footer. It reopens the same choice you were given the first time, and withdrawing consent is exactly as easy as giving it — one click, no form, no reason required.
You can also clear or block cookies in your browser. Every calculator on this site will keep working; you will simply be asked again, and preferences such as your theme will be forgotten between visits.
How long they last
- Your consent choice is remembered for six months, after which we ask again.
- Preference cookies last a year, or until you clear them.
- Analytics and advertising cookies last for the period set by the provider, which their own policies state.
- Session cookies are deleted the moment you close your browser.
In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland
Visitors in those regions see a consent notice from a certified consent management platform, as Google requires for personalised advertising there. It asks the same questions in the form the framework specifies, and your answer is recorded the same way.
