Writing numbers in words, correctly
The two systems that split at a thousand, how to fill a cheque so it cannot be altered, and the handful of mistakes that make a document ambiguous.

Writing a number in words looks like a task for a child until you have to do it on something that matters — a cheque, an invoice, a rent agreement, an affidavit. Then the questions arrive at once. Is it one crore twenty lakh, or twelve million? Does the "and" belong? Why does the form insist on the word "only" at the end? This page answers all of that, and the converter above does the mechanical part.
Two systems that split at a thousand
Both systems count identically up to nine hundred and ninety-nine. After that they part company, and never meet again.
The Indian system — used across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka — moves in steps of a hundred after the first thousand:

The international system moves in steps of a thousand throughout: thousand, million (10⁶), billion (10⁹), trillion (10¹²).
Neither is more correct. They are different conventions, and the only real error is mixing them inside one document.
Why the grouping looks different
Indian digit grouping separates the first three digits from the right, then every two after that. International grouping separates every three.
The same number, both ways:
- Indian: 12,34,567 — twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred and sixty-seven
- International: 1,234,567 — one million two hundred and thirty-four thousand five hundred and sixty-seven
This is why an Indian bank statement and an international spreadsheet showing the identical balance can look like different amounts at a glance. Nothing has changed but where the commas fall.
Filling in a cheque
Most people arrive here with a cheque in front of them. The conventions are worth knowing, because they exist to stop fraud rather than to look formal.
Write the amount in words on the words line, and in figures in the box. If the two disagree, the words generally prevail — courts have long treated the written amount as the more deliberate statement, on the reasoning that figures are easier to alter and easier to mistype.
End with the word "only". This is the one convention people skip. Its entire purpose is to close the line so nothing can be appended: "Forty-five thousand" can quietly become "Forty-five thousand five hundred" in the space left after it. "Forty-five thousand only" cannot.
Leave no gaps. Start at the far left of the line, and strike through any leftover space. The same logic as "only", applied to the beginning and middle rather than the end.
Name the paise if there are any. The Indian convention is "rupees … and … paise only". If the amount is whole, "rupees … only" is complete on its own.
A correctly filled words line looks like this:
Rupees one lakh twenty-three thousand four hundred and fifty-six and fifty paise only
Note what the converter above does for that: it always writes the amount in rupees, whichever number system you have selected. The system toggle changes how the number is grouped and named, not what currency it is. "One million rupees only" is an ordinary sentence; a converter that silently switched to dollars would change the meaning of a cheque line.
The "and" question
Indian and British usage keeps "and" before the final part of a number under a hundred:
- one hundred and five
- two thousand and forty-two
- one lakh and fifty
American usage generally drops it: "one hundred five". Both are understood everywhere; neither is wrong. This converter includes the "and", because that is the convention on Indian cheques, in Indian legal drafting and in the schools most readers of this page attended.
One point worth being careful about: "and" belongs before the last group only. "One hundred and twenty-three thousand and four hundred and fifty" is over-punctuated and reads badly. The correct form is "one lakh twenty-three thousand four hundred and fifty".
Hyphens, capitals and other small decisions
Hyphens join the two parts of a compound number from twenty-one to ninety-nine: forty-two, sixty-seven, ninety-nine. They do not join anything else. "Two-hundred" is wrong; "two hundred" is right.
Capitals are a house style, not a rule. Sentence case — capital on the first word only — is what most Indian banking and legal documents use, and it is what the main result above gives you. Title case is offered as a second output because letterheads and certificates often want it. Note that even in title case, small joining words like "and" stay lowercase: One Hundred and Five, not One Hundred And Five.
"Rupees" first or last? Both appear in practice. Cheque printing usually places "Rupees" at the start of the line, because it is pre-printed there. In running prose, "one lakh rupees" reads more naturally.
Where these conversions go wrong
Four mistakes account for nearly all the errors we see in documents.
Mixing the systems. "Rupees 1.2 crore (twelve million)" is internally consistent but jarring, and worse, invites a reader to check your arithmetic instead of your terms. Pick one system per document.
Confusing lakh and million. One lakh is a hundred thousand, not a million. The gap is a factor of ten, and it is the single most expensive slip on this list. If you take one thing from this page: one crore is ten million; one million is ten lakh.
Truncating paise instead of rounding. An amount of ₹99.996 is ninety-nine rupees and one hundred paise if you round the fraction naively — which is not a sum anyone can write. It should carry into the rupees and become one hundred rupees. The converter above handles that carry; a spreadsheet formula usually does not.
Assuming a comma placement is universal. Software that formats numbers with the en-US locale will render an Indian amount as 1,234,567 even inside a document written for an Indian reader. If your invoicing system does this, it is a locale setting, not a bug in your reading.
Reading large numbers quickly
A trick worth knowing, because it removes most of the mental arithmetic: count the digits after the first one.
In the Indian system, a number with six digits starts with lakh, and eight digits starts with crore. So 4,52,317 is "four lakh something" before you have read another digit, and 3,72,45,000 is "three crore something".
In the international system, seven digits is millions and ten digits is billions.
For a rough sanity check on any converted figure, count the digits before you read the words. If the digit count and the scale word disagree, one of them is wrong.
Common amounts in words
The amounts people most often need written out, generated by the converter above: the Indian reading, the wording for a cheque, and the same number read the international way.

Two readings cause most of the confusion. 1,20,000 is one lakh twenty thousand; read in the international system, the same number is one hundred and twenty thousand. And 2,50,00,000 is two crore fifty lakh, which, grouped as 25,000,000, is twenty-five million. Every row is one amount, grouped two different ways.
