In short

  • The age gap is the time from the earlier date of birth to the later one, counted in whole years, then whole months, then the days left over.
  • The gap never changes, but the difference in whole-year ages does. It is one year more from the older person's birthday until the younger person's.
  • Total days is the one measure that never depends on how months are counted, which is why gaps in days add up exactly and gaps in months do not.
  • Calculators disagree by a day or two when one counts real month lengths and another assumes 30-day months or divides by 365.

"How much older is she?" sounds like a question with one answer, and it is — but the answer can be written several ways, and the ways do not always agree. This page explains how the calculator counts the gap between two dates of birth, why the difference between two people's ages seems to change through the year, and where other calculators come out a day or two different.

Counting the gap

The age difference is the time between the two dates of birth. The calculator counts it the way an age is counted on a form: first whole years, then whole months, then the days left over.

Take Rahul, born on 20 November 1994, and Priya, born on 8 April 1997.

  1. Whole years. From 20 November 1994, two whole years reach 20 November 1996. A third would reach 20 November 1997, which is after Priya's birth. So: 2 years.
  2. Whole months. From 20 November 1996, four whole months reach 20 March 1997. A fifth would reach 20 April, too far. So: 4 months.
  3. Days left over. From 20 March to 8 April 1997 is 19 days.

Rahul is 2 years, 4 months and 19 days older than Priya. It is the same as asking how old Rahul was on the day Priya was born.

The calculator also gives the gap in other units:

MeasureRahul and Priya
Years, months and days2 years, 4 months, 19 days
Total months28 months, 19 days
Total weeks124 weeks, 2 days
Total days870 days
Total hours20,880 hours
Decimal years2.38 years

The 870 days is counted on the real calendar: 365 days to 20 November 1995, 366 to 20 November 1996 because 1996 had a 29 February, and 139 more to 8 April 1997. Weeks are 870 ÷ 7 = 124 remainder 2. The decimal figure is 870 ÷ 365.2425 = 2.38, using the average length of a year in the Gregorian calendar — 97 leap years in every 400.

Why the gap in years seems to change

Ask Rahul and Priya their ages on different days of the year and you will not always get a difference of 2.

On 17 October 2026, Rahul is 31 and Priya is 29: two years apart. On 1 December 2026, Rahul has had his birthday and is 32, while Priya is still 29 until April: three years apart. On 8 April 2027 Priya turns 30, and the difference is back to two.

The gap between their birthdays never changes; their ages are rounded down to whole years, and they are rounded at different times. Every year, from the older person's birthday until the younger person's, the older one has had this year's birthday and the younger has not, so their ages differ by one year more than the whole-year part of the gap.

How long that stretch lasts is exactly the leftover part of the gap. For Rahul and Priya it is 4 months and 19 days — from 20 November to 8 April, which is 139 days, or 140 when the February in between has 29 days. For the rest of the year, 226 days or so, the ages differ by two.

Only when two birthdays fall on the same day of the year is the difference in ages constant. Someone born on 28 February 1999 is exactly 2 years older than someone born on 28 February 2001, and their ages always differ by exactly two.

The calculator's table shows both people's ages on the date you choose, and the difference in whole years on that date, so you can see which part of the year you are in.

Days, months and why calculators disagree

Months are not all the same length, and that is the source of almost every disagreement between age calculators.

Take two dates in 2024: 31 January and 1 March. The calculator says the gap is 1 month and 1 day. One whole month from 31 January lands on the last day of February — 29 February in 2024, since February has no 31st — and from there to 1 March is one day. In total it is 30 days.

A calculator that treats every month as 30 days turns those 30 days into exactly 1 month and 0 days. One that divides by 365 days a year, or by 365.25, drifts by a day around leap years and long months. None of them is cheating; they are answering slightly different questions. The calendar method used here is the one people use when they say "I am 31 years, 10 months and 27 days old", and it is the same method as our Age Calculator.

Total days is the measure that never depends on any of this. A day is a day in every month. That is why, if you need to compare gaps or add them up, days are the unit to use.

Comparing a whole family

The calculator compares two people at a time, but a family is easy to do in pairs. Take a grandmother born on 12 January 1950, her son born on 3 August 1974 and his son born on 25 December 2005:

PairGapIn days
Grandmother and son24 years, 6 months, 22 days8,969
Son and grandson31 years, 4 months, 22 days11,467
Grandmother and grandson55 years, 11 months, 13 days20,436

In days the gaps add up exactly: 8,969 + 11,467 = 20,436. In years, months and days they do not quite: 24 years 6 months 22 days plus 31 years 4 months 22 days is 55 years 10 months 44 days, and 44 days is not a fixed number of months. Counted on the calendar from 12 January 1950 it comes to 55 years, 11 months and 13 days. So for any pair you care about, compare those two directly rather than adding gaps.

Leap years and 29 February

A year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except century years, which must divide by 400. So 2000 was a leap year and 1900 was not. The calculator walks the real calendar, so any gap that spans a 29 February includes it, as the 870 days above includes 29 February 1996.

Someone born on 29 February has a birthday only in leap years. Their gap to anyone else is counted the same way as everyone's: two people born on 29 February 2000 and 1 March 2000 are one day apart. In a year with no 29 February, the calendar method counts their year as complete on 28 February, because a whole month from the 29th, 30th or 31st ends on the last day of a shorter month: someone born on 29 February 2000 was 11 months and 29 days old on 27 February 2001 and exactly 1 year old on 28 February.

What the gap does not include

  • Time of birth. The calculator counts whole days between dates. Twins born ten minutes apart, either side of midnight, are one day apart by date, and two people born at opposite ends of the same day are zero days apart. For almost every purpose — forms, certificates, school or job age limits — the date is what counts.
  • Time zones. A date of birth is a date on the calendar where the person was born. The calculator does not convert it.
  • Anything about the two people. An age gap is arithmetic on two dates. What a particular gap means, between siblings or a couple or colleagues, is not something a calculator can say.

Using the calculator

Enter two names, which are optional and only label the results, and two dates of birth. The order does not matter: the calculator works out who is older. The "Show their ages on" date defaults to today and changes only the ages in the table, not the gap itself. Change it to see both ages on a wedding day, an exam date or a retirement date.

For other date arithmetic, the Date Difference Calculator counts days, weeks and working days between any two dates, and the Height Comparison tool puts two people side by side by height instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the age difference between two people?

Count from the earlier date of birth to the later one, in whole years first, then whole months, then the days left over. Someone born on 20 November 1994 is 2 years, 4 months and 19 days older than someone born on 8 April 1997 — 870 days in all.

Why does our age gap seem to change during the year?

The gap between the two birthdays never changes, but ages are counted in whole years. Between the older person's birthday and the younger person's, the older one has had a birthday this year and the younger one has not, so their ages differ by one more year than at other times.

Do I need the time of birth?

No. The calculator counts whole days between the two dates, which is what every form, certificate and conversation means by an age gap. Two people born on the same date a few hours apart have a gap of zero days.

Does it count leap years?

Yes. It walks the real calendar, so a gap that spans 29 February includes that day, and months are measured with their real lengths rather than an assumed 30 days.

Can I compare more than two people?

Compare them two at a time. For a family, compare each person with the eldest. In days, the gap between any other two is the difference between their gaps to the eldest; in years, months and days it can be a day or two out, because months differ in length, so compare that pair directly.
