Attendance rules are simple to state and awkward to plan around. The requirement is a percentage, but what a student can actually control is the next class, and turning one into the other takes a little algebra that is worth doing once properly.

The percentage

Attendance percentage is the classes attended divided by the classes held, multiplied by 100. Having attended 45 of the 64 classes held so far is 45 ÷ 64 × 100 = 70.31%.

Two details catch people out. The denominator is classes held, not classes in the timetable — a class that was cancelled was never held and does not count against anyone. And institutions often calculate attendance per subject rather than overall, so a healthy overall figure can hide one subject below the line.

Classes needed to reach the minimum

Below the minimum, the question is how many classes must be attended in a row to climb back. Attending x more classes adds x to both the classes attended and the classes held, so the target percentage r is reached when:

(attended + x) ÷ (held + x) = r ÷ 100

which gives:

x = (r × held − 100 × attended) ÷ (100 − r)

rounded up, because a fraction of a class cannot be attended.

At 45 of 64 and a 75% requirement, x = (4,800 − 4,500) ÷ 25 = 12. Attending the next 12 classes brings the record to 57 of 76, exactly 75%.

Each class attended moves the percentage less than the one before, because the total keeps growing. The climb back is always slower than the fall that caused it.

Classes you can miss

Above the minimum, the useful figure is the margin: how many classes can be missed while staying at or above it. Missing y classes adds y to the classes held and nothing to the classes attended:

attended ÷ (held + y) = r ÷ 100

which gives:

y = (100 × attended − r × held) ÷ r

rounded down, because missing one class too many takes the record below the line.

The margin is a ceiling, not an allowance. Illness, travel and cancelled buses do not wait for a student to have spare classes, and a margin spent early leaves nothing for them.

Why early absences weigh more

A single absence is a large share of a small total and a small share of a large one. Missing one class affects the percentage very differently depending on how many have been held:

The same absence costs 10 percentage points after 10 classes and 1 point after 100. That is why the first few weeks decide more than they appear to, and why a figure that looks alarming early on can recover quickly with steady attendance.

Why absences move it faster than attendance

For anyone above 50%, a missed class lowers the percentage by more than an attended class raises it. From 45 of 64:

Attending the next five lifts the figure by 2.15 percentage points; missing them drops it by 5.10. This is arithmetic rather than bad luck. Each class attended pulls the percentage towards 100, which is about 30 points away; each class missed pulls it towards zero, which is about 70 points away, so the pull downwards is stronger.

Planning the whole semester

A running percentage answers "where am I now?" The timetable answers the more useful question, "what do I have to do from here?"

If the semester has 90 classes and the requirement is 75%, the student needs 68 attended by the end, since 75% of 90 is 67.5 and a part-class does not count. Having attended 45 of the 64 held so far, 23 of the remaining 26 classes must be attended, and 3 can be missed.

The plan also shows early when the target is out of reach. At 30 of 64, the same 90-class semester needs 38 more classes but only 26 remain; attending every one of them ends the semester at 62.22%. Knowing that with 26 classes still to come is the point at which a conversation with the department can still help.

Where the rule applies to each subject, a good overall figure proves nothing. Three subjects:

Taken together that is 88 of 110 classes, 80%, comfortably above the line. Physics on its own is at 66.67% and needs 10 classes in a row to recover. Checking the weakest subject first, rather than the overall figure, is what avoids the surprise.

Labs and double periods

Some timetables count a practical or a double period as two classes, or record attendance in hours rather than sessions. Absences then weigh by length, not by number.

From 45 of 64, missing one ordinary class leaves 45 of 65 and raises the classes needed to reach 75% from 12 to 15. Missing a two-hour lab leaves 45 of 66, 68.18%, and raises it to 18. A skipped lab costs twice what a skipped lecture does.

Keep your own count

Attendance portals are updated by hand, sometimes days late, and entries go missing. A simple note of each class attended, kept as the semester goes, makes errors easy to spot — and a wrong entry is far easier to correct in the same week than at the end of the semester, when the list of students short of attendance is being drawn up.

Different minimums

75% is a common requirement, but each institution sets its own, and some set a different figure for practicals, clinical postings or particular programmes. The classes needed from 45 of 64 depend heavily on the figure:

A higher requirement does not just add a few classes; near the top it multiplies them, because each class attended moves the percentage less.

Rules, medical leave and condonation

The attendance rule that applies is the one in your own institution's regulations, and it is worth reading rather than assuming. Rules commonly specify whether attendance is counted per subject or overall, what counts as an excused absence, and whether a shortfall can be condoned — typically for documented medical reasons or for representing the institution — and by how much.

Condonation is discretionary and limited, and it depends on paperwork submitted at the time rather than at the end of the semester. The safer plan is to stay above the minimum on attended classes alone and treat condonation as a safety net for genuine emergencies.

Many Indian universities and boards set 75% as the minimum to sit examinations, often with a margin that can be condoned for medical or other documented reasons. The rule that applies is your own institution's, so check its regulations rather than relying on the usual figure.
